Working as a Building and Maintenance Facility Technician

Choosing and changing careers should not be taken lightly. A job is not the choice between a McDonald’s Big Mac or a Burger King’s Whopper. Deciding what line of work best suits your skills and interests requires some research.

Here at the Institute for Business and Technology part of our work is matching students to our job training programs. Our staff provides this career advice by helping students understand the ins and outs of different jobs. By helping IBT students to understand the daily life of Allied Health professionals and tradesmen our students can better select one of our programs that works for them.

So which one of our accredited, hands-on training programs is today’s feature? Ladies and gentlemen we introduce to you Jerry Tomae, the facilities operations supervisor of a 1.5 million square feet building in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Jerry works hard to make sure every aspect of his building functions properly. He achieves this through upkeep, maintenance, and repairs of the Securian Financial Group headquarters.

Learn more about being a building and maintenance facility technician by watching this Youtube video of Jerry Tomae talking about life as a facilities tech! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt0dyEVMHXs

We love this video because it highlights how dynamic the role of a building maintenance tech really is. A facilities tech must be HVAC trained, have carpentry skills, knowledge of hand tools, power tools, painting, electrical systems, plumbing, and even advanced computer skills! As Jerry explains in this video, many people don’t realize how technical the job of maintenance staff is. In today’s technologically advanced world, facilities technicians must know how to use energy management systems, and computers. Watching Jerry talk about his job really shows how working as a building and maintenance facility technician is more than being a laborer! This job requires knowledge of every aspect of buildings, and an ability to learn new skills and technologies quickly.

So is becoming a building and maintenance facility technician the right job for you? We’ve put together a checklist to help you decide!

  • I work well in changing environments.
  • I like to learn new skills and technologies.
  • I like to know a little bit about everything.
  • I work well with my hands, and like to fix things.
  • I am comfortable with technology.
  • I want a good job that doesn’t require years of college.

If you checked YES to most of these statements, it’s about time you call the Institute for Business and Technology to discuss enrollment in our building and maintenance facility technician program in Santa Clara, California!
